1️⃣ Establish calm routines early

The shift from summer freedom to school structure can feel jarring. One thing we’ve learned at Learn Locus is how much smoother things go when routines are set before the school year gets busy. Families who book tutoring sessions in July or August often find that the routine is already in place before the workload builds. It means students walk into exam prep season with less stress and more confidence. And it’s worth remembering - the best tutoring slots are often gone before school even starts.

2️⃣ Keep communication open

Ask your child what feels hardest so far. Sometimes the biggest challenge isn’t academics, but time management or balancing activities. We see this all the time when returning families reconnect with us: Doug always checks in with parents and students before the year begins, and it’s usually those conversations that surface challenges early. But if we don’t hear back, we can’t guarantee a spot will stay available — and by mid September, calendars are often full.

3️⃣ Focus on habits, not just homework

Instead of measuring progress by daily assignments, encourage habits that build resilience. A tidy workspace, a regular review of notes, and small study goals all reduce last-minute stress when exams approach. In our lessons, we notice how students who practice these small habits settle into sessions with more focus, and they carry that calm into the rest of their schoolwork.

Final thought

The first month sets the tone for the rest of the year. By creating structure, listening actively, and encouraging good habits, parents can help their children feel confident and prepared. From our side, we’ve seen how early planning and open conversations make all the difference.
