Teaching since 1990. Twenty years of it at the American School in London.
Doug began teaching mathematics at Ransom Everglades in Miami in 1990, and moved to London in 1999 to join the American School in London, where he taught for twenty years. About five years in, students started asking for help outside class. Evenings and weekends became a second practice, built on one idea: that a student who understands why an answer is right will still have it when the question changes.
Since 2019 that practice has been his whole work. He tutors a small number of students at a time, in high school and at university, on both sides of the Atlantic. He is known — by three decades of students, and by the parents who send him their next child — for making difficult material feel obvious, and for a calm that students borrow on exam day.
